Prof Masekela is a Paediatric Pulmonologist and is the Head of Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, at the University of KZN, RSA. She is an Honorary Visiting Associate Professor at the Queen Mary University in London, UK. She obtained her undergraduate medical degree at WITS, and completed her Specialist Paediatrics training at the University of Pretoria. Prof Masekela completed her Fellowship in Paediatric Pulmonology at the Catholic University in Leuven, Belgium and the University of Pretoria. Her research interests are Bronchiectasis in children; both in HIV- infected children as well as in cystic fibrosis. She also has an interest in lung physiological testing, particularly lung function testing in children and the determination of normative lung reference equations in African children and adults. Refiloe has published in peer-reviewed publications and has written 3 book chapters. She has presented her research and given invited lectures at national and international pulmonology congresses. She is a passionate teacher, an NRF C3 rated researcher and has acted as a reviewer for local paediatric and pulmonology journals and Masters and Doctoral theses.
Dr de Waal qualified as a Paediatrician in 2009 at the University of the Free State. In 2017, he obtained the South African Certificate in Asthma Care (NAEP) and in 2018, he obtained his Diploma in Allergology from the College of Family Physicians of South Africa. He qualified as a Certified Allergologist at the University of Cape Town in 2018 and obtained his M.Phil. degree in Allergology in 2019. Pieter currently works as a full-time subspecialist in Allergology at MediClinic, Bloemfontein. He also holds a sessional post at the University of the Free State, where he teaches the subjects of Allergology, Asthma and Pulmonology to both under and post graduate medical students and registrars. Dr de Waal is part of the South African National Asthma Education Programme (NAEP) executive committee and the South African Asthma Working Group. Pieter frequently presents at public talks on allergy related topics and acts as academic presenter of the Allergy Foundation of South Africa’s Allergy Workshops. Pieter has published and reviewed numerous articles in the Current Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the quarterly Society publication and has examined at both Allergy Diplomate and Allergy Certificate exit examinations.
